On the Upper North Shore, most garage door problems come from three things: big trees, ageing hardware and heritage streets. Premium Garage Doors repairs and replaces doors across Turramurra (2074), St Ives (2075), Killara (2071) and Hornsby (2077), Monday to Saturday from 7am to 6pm. As a guide, spring replacement costs $250 to $550 and a new insulated sectional door $1,800 to $4,500 installed, with GST included.

What does storm season do to garage doors here?
The Upper North Shore has some of the tallest street trees in Sydney, and a wide garage door is a big target. After a strong westerly or a summer storm we see three kinds of damage: panels dented or cracked by falling branches, doors pushed out of their tracks by wind, and safety sensors knocked out of line or blanketed in leaves. A door that has been hit can look fine but sit crooked, which puts uneven load on the springs and cables.
If a branch has struck your door, keep clear of it and do not force it up or down. A damaged door can drop suddenly. Photograph the damage for your insurer, pull the opener's release cord only if you can reach it safely, and call us. After big storms we prioritise doors that are stuck open or unsafe, because those leave a house exposed overnight. Our guide to why a garage door won't open covers the safe checks you can do while you wait.
How can you tell springs and openers are near the end?
Many homes in Turramurra, St Ives and Hornsby still run hardware from the 1980s and 90s. A standard torsion spring is rated for roughly 10,000 open and close cycles, which is about seven years at four cycles a day, so original springs have often been replaced once already or are living on borrowed time. Watch for these signs:
- The door feels heavier than it used to, or the opener strains and slows near the top.
- The door rises a little then stops, or closes faster than normal.
- You can see a gap in the spring coil, or hear loud creaks and pops.
- The opener is a noisy chain drive that rattles through the house.
Spring replacement is never a DIY job, because a wound spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury. Our spring replacement guide explains what a safe replacement involves. When springs and an old opener are both near the end, doing them in one visit avoids a second call-out.
Can you replace a garage door on a heritage street?
Usually, yes, but check first. Ku-ring-gai Council has a large number of heritage conservation areas, including streets in Killara and its neighbouring suburbs, and Hornsby Shire has its own. In NSW, fast-track complying development does not apply to heritage items or conservation areas, and a change that alters how a home looks from the street may need council consent. Look up your property's heritage status or ask council before you change the door's style or colour. We can supply door specifications, colour samples and photos if council asks for them.
The good news is that modern doors can look right on an old house. Timber-look steel sectionals, natural cedar doors and panel profiles with or without windows can all suit Federation and interwar facades. On the 1960s and 70s ranch-style homes of St Ives, wide flat or ribbed panels usually sit best.
Which door suits Upper North Shore homes?
- Insulated sectional, $1,800 to $4,500 installed. The default for wide double garages: quiet, well sealed against leaves and draughts, and easy to automate.
- Cedar or custom timber, from about $4,000. The choice for heritage facades in Killara and parts of Turramurra. It looks beautiful but needs its finish maintained.
- Timber-look steel sectional. Much of the look of timber with far less upkeep, which suits homes under heavy tree cover.
- Roller door, $900 to $2,500 installed. Less common here, but useful for narrow side garages and sheds where there is little room for ceiling tracks.

How do you keep a door running under a big canopy?
Leaf litter is the everyday enemy. Sweep the bottom track and the floor under the door every few weeks in autumn, wipe the sensor lenses when the door starts reversing for no reason, and keep overhanging branches trimmed back from the garage roofline. Lubricate rollers, hinges and springs with a garage door lubricant twice a year, and book a professional service every 12 to 18 months. Our maintenance checklist has the full routine.
Frequently asked questions
Do you cover Wahroonga, Pymble and Lindfield as well?
Yes. Alongside Turramurra, St Ives, Killara and Hornsby we work in Wahroonga, Warrawee, Pymble, Gordon, Lindfield and the surrounding Upper North Shore suburbs, Monday to Saturday from 7am to 6pm.
How quickly can you come after a storm?
We aim for same-day visits for urgent faults when you call early, and after big storms we put doors that are stuck open or unsafe first. Call 0410 888 118 and we will give you a clear time.
Is a timber-look door as good as real cedar?
It depends on what matters most to you. Real cedar has warmth and texture that suits heritage homes, but it needs its finish kept up. A timber-look steel door gives much of the look with very little maintenance, which many owners under heavy tree cover prefer.
